The details and recording of the final voicemail that Dolores O’Riordan left has emerged. It was a message for her friend and Eleven Seven Records label exec Dan Waite. The time stamp of the call was was about 1:12 a.m GMT, just a few hours before her unexpected passing. O’Riordan was due to enter the studio the following morning to lay down her vocals on a cover of The Cranberries’ hit song ‘Zombie’ by Bad Wolves.
As reported by TMZ, Dolores expresses her feelings about the Zombie cover during the phone call, ‘Hi Dan, it’s Dolores, I’m in London. I’m at the Park Hyatt Hilton, Actually, I think it’s fu**ing awesome! It sounds fu**ing terribly good!” In the short message she invites Waite to come into the studio session that was booked for later that morning to hear the results. Then she sends her love to his wife Irene.
O’Riordan was very enthusiastic about Bad Wolves’ take on her band’s 1994 hit song and had committed to contributing her own vocals to the track before her death. Speaking to Billboard, Bad Wolves singer Tommy Vext talked about the scheduled collaboration,
‘Until she was on board, we weren’t sure if the song was going to make the record or not. Dan was going to pick her up in the morning. I went to bed thinking, one of my childhood heroes, I was gonna get to collaborate on [a song with her]. The next morning, a friend of mine texted me, and then Zoltan [Bathory] from Five Finger Death Punch, who’s our manager, he texts me, and… I didn’t think it was real.’
An official coroner’s inquest into the cause of Dolores O’Riordan’s death had been scheduled for Apr. 3, but has been indefinitely postponed. You can listen to Bad Wolves’ cover of ‘Zombie’ below.
