Arctic Monkeys have released their first record in five years today. It follows 2013’s AM which was one of the bestselling vinyl albums of the decade, selling 27,000 copies.
The band didn’t release any singles to promote the album choosing instead to debut a string of songs live during recent show. The band debuted ‘Four out of Five’ on The Jimmy Fallon Show it was their first television performance in four years for the Tonight Show audience. The video is available below.
During the band’s hiatus, singer Alex Turner returned to his supergroup side-project The Last Shadow Puppets for the 2016 record Everything You’ve Come to Expect, and Arctic drummer Matt Helders worked with Iggy Pop on the same year’s Post Pop Depression.
In 2017, when the Arctic’s started to work on Turner’s latest demos, which he had penned on a Steinway piano in his Los Angeles home. The tunes were such a dramatic shift from AM and the band’s back catalogue that guitarist Jamie Cook advised they could become a Turner solo record. However, the band worked to make Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, an album that signals a sizeable shift in direction as it examines themes of fictionalized science, identity and technology.
