No fewer than 500 fixed penalty notices have been issued to motorists for exceeding the speed limit since extensive roadworks began on the M& motorway in Co. Kildare.

Two vehicles have collided with barriers at upgrading works on the M7 in Co. Kildare in the past week alone. A truck crashed through a barrier to avoid slowing traffic up ahead while a van hit a barrier and landed in the works area.

From Monday, two GoSafe Van will monitor the route to deter motorists from breaking the 60 KPH speed limit on the stretch of road between Junctions 8 and 11 south of Naas.

Gardai say since the works began 32 motorists have been prosecuted for dangerous driving.

Recent incidents include:

  • Very high speeds
  • Poor lane discipline
  • Vehicles breaking through crash barriers

Traffic incidents along the route continue to be a cause of significant delays to road users on the route.

From the 26th of November 2018 (Monday), An Garda Síochána will be deploying two GoSafe Vans on this route to further enhance enforcement activity by local Roads Policing Units.

This measure is deployed to deter motorists from breaking the 60kph speed limit in a renewed effort to keep both drivers and those carrying out works on the route safe.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal is to urge motorists to slow down, avoid loss of life and serious injury and prosecution for driving offences. To date, although no loss of life has occurred, there has been very serious incidents.
