Metallica have revealed that they will honour the 20th anniversary of their much loved ‘S&M’ record.
The celebrations will see the band perform a special classical performance dubbed ‘S&M²’. According to the NME, the band are set to reunite with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
Metallica had performed with the classical musicians before on the live record and DVD release.
This anniversary performance is part of the program for the grand opening of the new Chase Centre. The building is an all-purpose arena located in San Francisco that will also be the official home of NBA champions the Golden State Warriors.
James Hatfield and Lars Ulrich joined forces with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra music director Michael Tilson Thomas to make the announcement at the Chase Center. In a statement they said:
“Please join us for this one-night-only show as we celebrate the addition of what is sure to become a cultural landmark in the Bay Area. We’re thrilled to be invited to be a part of it and humbled to be sharing the stage with the legendary MTT and the city’s finest musicians in the San Francisco Symphony.”
The original ‘S&M’ record was in part a tribute to late great Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.

The bass player had a deep love of classical music. ‘S&M’ features the fan favourite ‘No Leaf Clover’. It was composed by Michael Kamen and the performance of ‘S&M²’ will take place September 6, 2019.
