Soundgarden fans were reminded of the band’s 1994 hit ‘Black Hole Sun’ last week! That’s when a team of scientists at the Event Horizon Telescope revealed the first-ever photograph of a supermassive black hole.
The photo with its reflective glow conjured up memories of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell performing one of the biggest songs of the 1990s.
Loyal fans of the group have been so moved by the impact of the image that they have started a petition to name the black hole after Connell who tragically died by suicide in 2017.
Spin published a description of the petition written by its creator Giuliana Jarrin
“I ask NASA, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration and all the astronomers and scientists involved in this discovery, to name this black hole after Chris Cornell, this would be a ‘surreal’ and amazing way to honour his life and his contribution to music.”
“Black Hole Sun” one of the band’s most well-known songs, featured in Soundgarden’s fourth studio record Superunknown. in 1995.
At the time, the single won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance reaching No. 2 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and spent 25 weeks there following its 1994 release.
