Soul Singer-Songwriting Legend Bill Withers Has Died Aged 81

The popular and influential soul singer Bill Withers, who crafted songs such as Lean on Me, Ain’t No Sunshine and Lovely Day has died age of 81 following heart complications his family have said.

Withers wrote and recorded a raft of hits including Use Me and Just the Two of Us, before retiring from public life in the mid-80s. He is survived by his wife Marcia Johnson and their two children, Todd and Kori.

He was a three-time Grammy Award winner and a 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Many of his songs still resonate today.

Lean On Me is perhaps his most iconic song, but he also found success with tracks like Grandma’s Hands, Use Me, and Lovely Day.

His music has been covered by artists such as Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Paul McCartney, Sting, Johnny Mathis, Aaron Neville, Al Jarreau, Mick Jagger, Nancy Wilson, Diana Ross.

His songs are often used on the big screen, including “The Hangover,” “28 Days,” “American Beauty,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Crooklyn,” “Flight,” “Beauty Shop,” “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Flight.”
