Video tapes of Top Of The Pops performances feared lost are going under the hammer thanks to a fan who recorded them in the 1970s.
The footage features stars such as Sir Elton John, Sir Rod Stewart, 10cc, Roxy Music, Status Quo and Elvis Presley and had previously been thought lost after the BBC got rid of parts of its archive and recorded over old film to save money.
The performances were recorded by a Welsh gentleman on 34 domestic tape reels and were recorded direct from the television via the 405 line system using a Sony CV-2000 which was one of the first video tape recorders produced for home use.
These were catalogued and collated on behalf of various record companies with the monochrome recordings having been digitally transferred.
A digital DVD backup copy of the tapes featuring all of the recordings will be included with the collection going under the hammer at Omega Auctions and you can read more here.
Auctioneers expect the tapes to fetch between €5500 and €8900 when the auction takes place on September 8.
The recordings are sold without copyright, auctioneers said, and no reproduction is allowed.
