Tesco confirm yesterday the retail giant it is to hire more than 1,000 new staff.
The retail giant will create up to 1,150 new positions to support business operations on the run-up to Christmas.
450 full-time, permanent jobs will be available throughout the country, with 120 in Cork. They will also create 700 temporary roles to assist with a safe, easy shopping trip during the Christmas period.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Tesco’s latest recruitment drive “provides much-needed good news in challenging times.”
He went on to thank Tesco staff and all retail workers who have kept our shops open during the pandemic. He believes they are playing a vital role, ensuring people have access to essential supplies in a safe environment.
“These additional jobs will further improve the shopping experience for customers as well as providing an employment boost in Cork and right across the country.”
Tesco Ireland chief executive Kari Daniels was full of praise of her colleagues and had some words of her own.
“Since the start of this pandemic, our colleagues have risen to the challenge to continue to serve customers and communities. We are pleased to be able to add these roles at this challenging time. We look forward to welcoming these new team members who will enjoy good careers in a dynamic retail industry.”
Tesco employs more than 13,000 people in 151 stores around the country and supports 47,000 jobs both directly and indirectly.
The new roles will spread across a range of different areas. Positions to fill include assembly and fulfilment of online customer orders, delivery drivers, customer assistants and many other positions.
Long-standing staff will share additional hours to help the handling of Covid-19 and Christmas trading.
