Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family have said.
His son Jason told the BBC his father died peacefully in his sleep while in the Bahamas, having been “unwell for some time.”
He said: “We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.”
“A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”
The Scottish actor had a very successful film career, winning an Oscar, two Baftas and three Golden Globes in a career spanning many decades.
However Connery was best known for his portrayal of 007 in the popular movie franchise, and was the first star to play the iconic role on the big screen.
Connery went on to appear as Bond in seven films.
News of Connery’s death has been met by a flood of tributes.
Actor Hugh Jackman said: “I grew up idolizing Sean Connery. A legend on screen, and off.”
Star Trek actor George Takei said: “Sean Connery was a movie legend, even far into his golden years. Our strongest Bonds were formed by him, and he was Untouchable. He passed today at age 90, a suave hero to the end.”
