An Australian surfer has spoken about how he survived a terrifying shark attacks and managed to make his way back to shore and walk hundreds of metres to get medical assistance. The incident happened when the 29-year-old man was surfing off Kangaroo Island off Australia’s southern coast.

He was in the water when he said he felt a sensation like”being hit by a truck” down his left side.”It bit me around my back, buttock and elbow and took a chunk out of my board.I got a glimpse of the shark as it let go and disappeared.”

The seriously injured surfer managed to paddle to shore and then walk some distance up the beach at D’Estrees Bay, where a member of the public helped him and drove him towards the island’s main city Kingscote. Paramedics rushed to meet them on the way and the man was airlifted to Adelaide on the mainland.

The man’s injuries, although serious, were not life threatening.

“I’m feeling incredibly lucky and grateful, and I’m optimistic I’ll make a full recovery,” the surfer said. Eight people have died as a result of shark attacks in Australian waters so far this year.
