Former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has been dismissed as manager of Cypriot champions Apoel just two months after his appointment.

Having just taken charge in November, he won two of the eight league fixtures he took charge of.

Struggling Apoel have lost their last four games, leaving them 11th in the table.

The club said it has ended “its cooperation” with McCarthy. “We wish Mr McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck,” Apoel said in a statement.

Apoel have now had 13 permanent coaches since 2015.

It could leave the recently signed Republic of Ireland international Jack Byrne nervously anticipating what future he might have in Cyprus, just two days after confirming his free-transfer from Shamrock Rovers to the Cypriot outfit, much on the recommendation of the now ousted McCarthy.

61-year-old McCarthy handed 24-year-old Byrne his debut for the Republic of Ireland in 2019 and is believed to be a major fan of the young Dub who has been the best player in domestic football here for the past couple of seasons.
