Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle has said that before their son Archie was born, the Royal Family had expressed concerns over how dark his skin would be. She said that this led to him not being given the title of Prince.
Speaking to Ophra Winfrey, Meghan said, “They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security”.
She continued, “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘you won’t be given security, not gonna be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born”.
“A frightening constant thought” – Meghan
Meghan Markle whose mother is black and her father white, said that she ended up having suicidal thoughts and considered self harming, having sought help but got none.
“I … just didn’t want to be alive anymore”. She added, “And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought”.
Meghan also admitted to having these depressive thoughts while pregnant. “Yes. This was very, very clear”, she said.
This interview comes following a continuing row between Harry and Meghan on one side and the British Monarchy on the other.
Meghan has also claimed that the Royal Family failed to protect her against malicious claims, but lied to protect others.
“It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family”, Meghan explained.
“There’s the family, and then there’s the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalise that because the queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me”.
“Can you put all this in writing?”
The couple had stepped down from their Royal duties and are beginning a new life in the USA.
Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry has explained that he left because he was worried of history repeating itself, referring to the death of his mother Diana in 1997.
He also added that he has too much respect for his grandmother, the Queen to blindside her, but his father Charles has stopped taking his calls.
He also added that he felt “let down” by the way his father handled the whole situation.
“I had three conversations with my grandmother, and two conversations with my father before he stopped taking my calls. And then he said, can you put this all in writing?”, Harry said to Oprah.
Harry added that they had to find other ways of making money as “my family literally cut me off financially”.
As the interview concluded, Harry also added, “I’m sad that what’s happened has happened, but, we did everything that we could to make it work”.
