Minister Warns Against Excitement At Low Outdoor Transmission Rate

A senior government minister’s cautioned against reading too much into a single set of data in relation to the spread of Covid 19.

It’s after a report showing just 0.1% of Ireland’s Covid cases since the start of the pandemic, have been linked to outdoor transmission.

It’s led to calls from the restaurant sector for the resumption of outdoor dining.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath, insists the government’s reopening plan is focused on resuming outdoor activity on a phased basis:

We need to be careful about placing too much reliance on one set of data. I mean the HPSC data some months ago would have also indicated very, very low outbreaks in hospitality for example. The fact is, there is a hgh degree of community transmission that is untraced, about 20% of cases.”
