Manchester United have confirmed the signing of 36-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo on a two-year deal from Juventus with the option to extend for a further year.

The Portugese veteran scored 118 goals in 292 games during his first spell at Old Trafford and says he “can’t wait” to play in front of the United fans again with the club that holds a “special place” in his heart.

Cristiano’s sensational return to Manchester United will increase the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjær to lead the club to major titles. Solskjær’s role as United boss since 2018 has been conspicous by a lack of titles and silverware.

United finished second last season and after adding Jadon Sancho, Raphaël Varane and now Ronaldo, the pressure is manifold. Their net spend is greater than that of any other Premier League club and they may yet add another midfielder this window. Over the past five seasons United have spent a net £500m.

The five-time Ballon D’or winner, has won over 30 major trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, seven league titles in England, Spain and Italy, and the UEFA European Championship for his native Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo said: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday. I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”
