Church Leaders say they’re very sorry to hear Britain’s Queen Elizabeth won’t be able to attend a church service marking the centenary of partition in Armagh.
Buckingham Palace says the Queen’s ‘reluctantly accepted medical advice to rest for the next few days‘.
A two day visit to Northern Ireland was due to get underway today, with the Service for Reflection and Hope due to take place tomorrow.
The statement adds: “The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland, and looks forward to visiting in the future.”
In a statement, Ireland’s church leader’s group wished the Queen well and ‘acknowledged the significance of her commitment to the work of peace and reconciliation’.
The prayer service at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral has been organised by the four main churches in Northern Ireland.
The President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins rejected an invite to the church service earlier this year.
