JJ Abrams is a director who is fair to say hot property. He is responsible for some of the biggest blockbusters of recent times, with Star Trek, Star Wars, and Mission Impossible among some of the franchises sticking out on an impressive CV.

And now, Abrams has confirmed he has plans to bring the story of Ireland’s biggest rock band, U2 to the Netflix screens.

It was reported earlier this month that Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions had teamed up with Netflix for the series. It was also decscribed as “in the early development stages”.

Abrams was MC for the Oscar Wilde Awards earlier this week. This is an annual event which pays tribute to Ireland’s contribution to the television, film and music industries.

“very excited”

JJ Abrams said that he was “very excited” about this U2 project.

It also emerged that this U2 show will be written by Anthony McCarten. McCarten is also highly regarded as a writer, having worked on the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

He has also worked on the upcoming biopic on the late Whitney Houstan, I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Back in January, U2 re-released a special acoustic cover of their single ‘Bloody Sunday’ to mark 50 years since its original release.

Frontman Bono and the Edge released a special cover of the track and shared it via their Instagram account.

This new cover also saw Bono change the lyrics, “Here at the murder scene / The virus of fiction, reality TV/ Why so many mothers cry/ Religion is the enemy of the Holy Spirit guide/ And the battle just begun/ Where is the victory Jesus won?”.

This post also shows the caption, “30 January 2022 – With love, Bono & Edge”. Check out the cover for yourselves here.

In more recent times, Liam Gallagher called U2 and other alleged rock n’roll bands “boring”. More on this here.
