Anyone who has worked from home over the last 12 months is more satisfied with their job and lifestyle than those who had not, according to new statistics from the Central Statistics Office.

Employees who worked mostly from home with a mix of office, hub or travel were most satisfied with both their job and life as a whole.

The vast majority (94.2%) were either satisfied or very satisfied with their life, marginally more than those who worked completely from home.

The CSO said that nearly half (48.9%) of full-time staff in organisations of 100 people or mote had worked remotely at some point during the past year, compared to just under one third (31.3%) of full-time workers in organisations of fewer than 20 people.

More than one-third (34.6%) of employees who were remote working at some stage of the pandemic were no longer working from home. For example, when this survey was conducted in the third quarter of 2021, 82% of employees in the education sector had returned to the workplace and were no longer working remotely.

Looking at the impact of remote working on job and life satisfaction, The CSO's Maureen Delamere, said: “Very high job and life satisfaction levels were reported by workers irrespective of working arrangements, (92%) overall satisfaction with life and 89% job satisfaction), with very little difference in satisfaction levels based on what type of hybrid working was availed of.

Workers who were working mostly from home with a mix of office, hub or travel or remote working completely at home were most satisfied with both their job and life as a whole. The majority (94%) of these employees were satisfied or very satisfied with their life, compared with 92% of those working mainly in the office with a mix of some office, hub or travel. Job satisfaction was highest for those with a blended working pattern of mostly home, with mix of office, hub or travel (92%), just one percentage point higher than for those working completely at home, or at the office with a mix of home, hub or travel.
