A fire on Dame Street has caused disruption in Dublin city centre this afternoon. Smoke could be seen billowing from the top floor of a building as firefighters tackled the blaze.
Four units of Dublin Fire Brigade tackled the blaze, with much of the city centre’s traffic brought to a halt. Up to four units of Dublin Fire Brigade fought the top floor blaze at a building on Dame Street.
The incident brought much of the city centre’s traffic to a halt, with traffic cordoned off from Parliament Street to the top of South Great George’s Street with diversions in place.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area while members of the public who were planning on taking public transport through the city centre are being advised to be aware that bus diversions are in place.
In a statement, Dublin Bus said: "We wish to advise customers that due to an incident on Dame Street on Saturday 17th December 2022, all Routes travelling Southbound and Northbound will divert via Winetavern Street, Ormond Quay and back onto normal route.
"Diversions will be in place until further notice." A garda spokesperson said: "Dame St in Dublin City Centre remains closed at this time as fire services continue to deal with an incident on the street. Local diversions are in place."
