A Norwegian man who took his Irish rental car home to Norway has been jailed for three months after being extradited back to Ireland earlier this year.

The judge was told he managed to clock up thousands of miles as he drove across Europe in what was flagged to foreign police forces as a stolen Audi.

Bjorn Erlend Tveter is a 41-year-old telecom engineer from Norway, who used to live in Celbridge in Co. Kildare and in late 2020, he signed a 12-month lease for an Audi rental.

The following day he was caught speeding in it in the Netherlands.

When he refused to give it back, the car was flagged as stolen and eventually seized by police in Norway.

By the time it was taken off him, he had clocked up 9,000 miles.

Tveter was extradited back to Ireland where he was today handed a one-year prison sentence for using a fraudulent rental agreement.

Judge Martin Nolan suspended the final nine months of his sentence. He also ordered him to pay the rest of what he owes to the rental company.
