Paul Mescal has become the latest actor to be linked to the James Bond role.

Entering a list which features huge household names from the world of showbusiness, including Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal has been tipped at 33/1 to succeed Daniel Craig as the suave 007 agent.

Mescal whose performance in Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor this year, has become the “most likely Irishman” to take up the coveted role, according to betting experts Oddspedia.

The Kildare native has been tipped ahead of fellow Irish actors Jamie Dornan, Michael Fassbender who both stand at 40/1, with Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy at 50/1, while Colin Farrell sits as a major outsider 1000/1.

Irish Poldark star Aidan Turner does stand at an outside bet of 20/1.

Looking further up the list, Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson remain joint favourites for the Bond role, tipped at identical odds of 5/2, with other actors Tom Hardy 9/1, James Norton 3/1 and Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page 8/1 closely following.

Mescal Goes From Strength To Strength

These rumours regarding the James Bond role were previously addressed by Mescal during an interview back in 2020.

While he admitted the role may have been out of his reach at the time, Mescal added that he is a fan of the franchise, and will continue to watch the films in the future.

He said, “I’m a huge Bond fan. I think it’s an incredible franchise. But it feels very, very far away from current circumstances”.

“Would I play Bond? Yeah? I don’t know”, he added. “If it ever came my way, we’d have a discussion about it. I don’t know. I don’t want to say yes or no. I am a massive fan, and will continue to be, regardless”.

Fast forward three years, Paul Mescal’s stock has certainly risen since that chat.

The Maynooth man was also awarded Best Actor at the Olivier Awards for his role as Stanley in the West End Production of A Streetcar Named Desire. More on that here.
