The Irish government have been told to remove the TikTok application from their phones. It follows an updated security warning from the National Cyber Security Centre.
The NCSC conducted a technical assessment of the risks posed to the country by TikTok. The advice it says is that the app shouldn't be installed on public sector devices.
Similar advice has been given by the European Commission and both the British and U.S. Governments, amid repeated and concerning allegations of espionage by the Chinese Government through the app.
Sinn Féin TD Louise O'Reilly wants to know how widespread its use it: ''The first question is how many people with official devices have Tiktok on their phones given that their has been a lot of chat recently about potential security issues so I'd like to know, specifically I suppose, government ministers and ministers of state actually have the app.''
While Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell, who uses TikTok, says he wants more information: ''I have no difficulty whatever with adhering to security advice that's being provided , however I would really like to know what concerns the national security committee have.''
Ireland is following the trend on TikTok, which some U.S. politicians have described as a 'spy balloon' in your phone.
