The BBC are to celebrate the career of late singer George Michael this month.
George Michael was one of the most loved British singers of all time, who burst onto the stage as one half of 1980s pop group Wham!, alongside Andrew Ridgeley.

This month will see the BBC mark the 40th anniversary of Wham!’s debut album ‘Fantastic’, as well as commemorate what would have been George Michael’s 60th birthday. The singer passed away in December 2016.
Such events include a range of interviews being shown on BBC Radio on June 17, which explore George Michael’s rise to prominece as one half of Wham! Listeners can also check out a Top 30 countdown of George Michael songs.
Music lovers can also check out George Michael – Live at Earl’s Court (10.40pm), filmed at his final two concerts at London’s Earls Court. These shows took place in front of 40,000 fans in August 2008. It also included both Wham! and George Michael classics and covers.
Elsewhere, several household names including Westlife’s Mark Feehily, and B*Witched’s Sinead O’Carroll and Lindsey Armaou will also share their favourite Wham! memories, along with Holly Johnson, Matt Goss and others.
On BBC Sounds, Melanie C will also look back on George Michael’s Older album to mark it’s 25th anniversary, include contributions from James Blunt, Russell T Davies, Ed Sheeran, Bananarama, and former Wham! backing singer Shirlie Kemp.
Back in 2021, George Michael’s former partner Kenny Goss won a long running court battle, and was awarded a share of the late singer’s £97 million.
