A new podcast series sees Paul McCartney explore the people, experiences and art that inspired his songwriting.
McCartney: A Life in Lyrics will allow listeners to sit in on conversations between the Beatles ultra-icon and Pulitzer Prize-winning Irish poet, Paul Muldoon over two seasons and a total of 24 episodes.
These conversations were held over several years as the two collaborated on the best-selling book, “The Lyrics: 1965 to Present.”
The new series is described as “a combination master class, memoir, and improvised journey with one of the most beloved figures in popular music.”
Each episode focuses on one song from McCartney’s iconic catalog – spanning early Beatles through his solo work.
“When we listened back to the tapes, we realized there was something very special happening in these conversations – It was McCartney unfiltered,” Muldoon explained.
Season 1 features 12 episodes that include timeless favorites like ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ‘Back in the USSR,’ ‘Let It Be,’ ‘Penny Lane,’ ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘Helter Skelter.’
In episode one, McCartney’s tackles The Beatles classic ‘Eleanor Rigby.’
The Liverpudlian musician explains one of the songs well-known lines:
“My mom’s favorite was Nivea and I love it to this day. It kind of scared me a little that women used quite so much cold cream, and it was my dread, when I got older and got married, that I would marry someone who would [wear a lot of cold cream] and put one of those big shower caps on and the curlers and have masses of things. So, that played on my mind quite a bit… She’s wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door,” McCartney said.
McCartney and Muldoon have previously collaborated on the #1 New York Times bestseller The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, which provided the genesis of more than 50 hours of recorded conversations.
The Lyrics will be released in paperback on November 7, 2023 with additional new chapters.
