Cillian Murphy has won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his performance in Oppenheimer at the Golden Globe Awards.
Murphy who was nominated in the category alongside fellow Irish actors Andrew Scott (All Of Us Strangers), and Saltbarn’s Barry Keoghan, came out on top in the Christopher Nolan directed film.
Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), and Leonardo Di Caprio (Killers Of The Flower Moon) were also nominated in that Best Actor category.
The nominations were confirmed last month. More on that story from Nova here.
“I salute you”
Murphy’s triumph was one of five awards picked up by Oppenheimer on the night, including Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr, Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Original Score – Motion Picture for Ludwig Goransson, and Best Director for Nolan.
Speaking to the audience at the awards ceremony, Cillian Murphy hailed Christopher Nolan as a “visionary director”, thanking him “for having faith in me for 20 years and six feckin’ pictures”.
The Peaky Blinders star also paid homage to the film’s “incredible ensemble cast” for “carrying me and holding me through this movie”.
Murphy added “To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends, stunning work – I salute you”.
He also thanked his family for their support. “I’m the luckiest man”, he said.
