Following his Golden Globes win, Cillian Murphy has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Leading Role at the SAG Awards for Oppenheimer.
Murphy is believed to be a frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Actor, along with Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers.
Corkonian Murphy is among a half-dozen SAG Awards rookie nominees spread across the film and TV categories, while numerous others were honored with their first solo bids after previously landing cast or ensemble attention.
Murphy has been lauded for his performance of huge depth and characterisation of the titular role as Robert J. Oppenheimer in a dramatization of the life story of Oppenheimer, the physicist who had a large hand in the development of the atomic bomb, thus helping end World War 2. We see his life from university days all the way to post-WW2, where his fame saw him embroiled in political machinations.
Oppenheimer received four nominations, the other three nominations being Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr., and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Emily Blunt. If the film wins in all four categories, it would become the second film to do so following Everything Everywhere All At Once’s four wins at the SAG Awards last year.
Element Pictures-produced Poor Things received two nominations: Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for Emma Stone, and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Willem Dafoe.
The 30th annual SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix on Saturday, February 24th at 8pm E.T. (February 25th, 3am Irish time) from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
