Investigations are ongoing into an explosion in Dublin which happened at a homeless hostel in the city centre on Thursday afternoon.
The suspected pipe bomb detonated at a homeless hostel on Little Britain Street at around 3.30pm, killing a man in his 30s.
The victim a Lithuanian man was in the room at the time and died instantly. 71 people were in the shelter at the time which thankfully saw no one elsewhere injured.
Gardaí now suspect the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device that detonated underneath the deceased man’s bed.
Sources said that the device was a pipe bomb and inquiries into how and why the device exploded are ongoing.
The army bomb disposal team was called in, later carrying out a controlled explosion, to make the scene safe.
Homeless charity DePaul says it’s shocked and saddened by yesterday’s incident.
It adds its primary focus has been to ensure service users and staff are being supported to deal with the impact of the incident, and it’ll continue to liaise with the Gardaí as they continue their investigations.
