Hozier have become the fourth Irish artist to reach number one in the US Billboard 100 song charts.

The singer becomes the first Irish artist to achieve this feat since Sinead O'Connor reached number one with 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in 1990.

The Wicklow singer joins a very exclusive club including Sinead O'Connor, U2 and Gilbert O'Sullivan as Irish artists who have come out on top in the US Billboard Chart.

Having debuted in the chart with 'Too Sweet', Hozier has now climbed from second to top spot in the past week.

Too Sweet is the first single from his latest EP, Unheard which arrived last month (March 29).

It has also reached number one in the UK, and Ireland, as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Previously, Hozier had reached second spot in the chart with his single, 'Take Me To Church' in 2014.

"taken massively by surprise"

Reacting to this news via X, Hozier said that he was "taken massively by surprise by it", adding that he was also "so thrilled" that his fans are enjoying the track.

News of this comes almost two weeks on from when Hozier reached that milestone of a maiden number one in the Irish charts with 'Too Sweet'.

“Thank you so so much for this Irish #1. It’s very unexpected and I’m thrilled and honored. Thank you for all the support. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the song, it’s a joy. I hope to see you soon. Thank you so much", the singer said at the time.
