Jon Bon Jovi has revealed that he had to be “talked off the ledge” ahead of his vocal surgery in 2022.

The singer underwent a procedure known as thyroplasty, having opened up that he almost lost his voice twice.

Bon Jovi has even recently admitted that he is uncertain if he will ever return to the live stage again, amid ongoing vocal issues.

“I don’t know about a tour”, he said previously. “It is my desire to do a tour next year, but I’m still recovering from a major surgery”.

In another interview, Bon Jovi also added: “If the singing is not great, if I can’t be the guy I once was… then I’m done”, he explained. “And I’m good with that”. More on that here.

“talk me off the ledge”

Speaking recently, Bon Jovi revealed that he almost lost his voice twice, but insists that he would never agree to lip-sync in order to save his vocal chords.

“People had to talk me off the ledge, because you’re like, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong! What’s wrong?'”, he explained.

Dismissing the idea that he could lip sync, Bon Jovi was adamant: “I’d rather get hit by a bus on the highway”.

He also said that it took a while for him to recover following his operation two years ago.

“I could talk the day after the surgery,” he said. “I just sounded like the Godfather. It takes some retraining of the mind and the body and then the spirit, and you just have to be patient. I did not excel in the patience category. I’m not Superman. It’s just a tattoo that I have on my arm”, he stated.

Undergoing an extensive fitness regime including working on his core and back to aid his recovery, the singer has also been working with speech pathologists to retrain the vocal muscles.

“Don’t doubt that I can’t sing anymore. This isn’t a situation that the singer has lost his voice,” he added. “Whether or not I can ever do a 100-show tour again, I don’t know. But if I can have joy on the stage on night one, that would be great”.

Bon Jovi’s new album, ‘Legendary’ will arrive next month (June 7). More on this here.
