‘Back In Black’, the breakthrough album from AC/DC has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America, having sold over 27 million copies in the US.
The album is now the third highest-certified album in U.S history. It currently ranks behind Eagles’ ‘Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975), an album which as moved 38 million units.
Standing at top spot, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ has been certified platinum 34 times.
‘Back In Black’ was previously been certified 25 times platinum in December 2019, where it ranked in fourth place on the RIAA list at that stage. The album first went platinum in October 1980.
It was also the first album released by AC/DC without frontman Bon Scott, who died a few months earlier.

Following Scott’s death, AC/DC turned to Brian Johnson to front the band, and the rest is history.
Speaking about the album, Brian Johnson once admitted that he had no idea how successful it would ultimately become.
“I’d just melted me brain in there, and I didn’t know if it was good or bad,” he said. “That was the first time I’d been in the Bahamas, anyway, or near America, you know, and you (have to) remember, I was just fascinated by the whole culture and all, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing! And (laughs) lucky, really — I was a bit lucky, I think”, he said.
The album also includes the single You Shook Me All Night Long, which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Back In Back Surpasses One Billion YouTube Views
News of the recent success of Back In Black, also comes months after the album’s title track surpassed one billion views on YouTube.
It is also the second AC/DC track to reach this milestone, with Thunderstruck joining the club back in 2021.
