The number of fixed-charge notices issued for road traffic offences has decreased by 14 per-cent.

This comes despite the numbers of deaths on the roads rising.

New data from the Department of Justice shows that nearly 48,000 fewer fines were issued by Gardaí last year compared to 2020.

Road safety group Parc has expressed concern over the decline.

They say the peak in offence detections coincided with reduced traffic during pandemic restrictions.

The drop in detection rates has affected 17 of the 22 divisions nationwide, with the most significant decreases in Wexford/Wicklow (-41%), Dublin East (-39%), and Cork North (-39%).

During the same period, road deaths have surged by 27 per-cent, climbing from 145 in 2020 to 184 last year.
