The bitter rivalry between Blur and Oasis is to be retold in a new West End play.

The play which is currently in development, is to hit London stages next year. It is set to be titled, The Battle.

This play is to look at the rivalry which existed between the Britpop legends from the 1990s, as each one revelled in the UK music scene.

It will centre around 1995, a year which saw both bands go toe to toe in the charts, as fans from each band argued over whether Blur would top the charts with ‘Country House’ or would Oasis take top spot with ‘Roll With It’.

“comedy with teeth”

The Battle is being written by John Niven, a humourist and writer who is also an A&R executive and former indie rocker.

It will also be produced by Simon Friend, whose credits also include The Girl On The Train, Ghost Stories, and Life Of Pi.

Confirming this news in a recent interview, Simon Friend described this play as a “comedy with teeth”. He also added that negotiations are also underway with a “notable director”.

It is also being reported that the search for the cast has begun, with the team seeking actors to play the Gallagher brothers, as well as Blur members Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree among others.

Other information including dates, venue and tickets was not confirmed at the time of writing.

News of this play also comes as Oasis announced a return to the stage with a brand new tour, featuring Noel and Liam Gallagher. This will include two shows at Croke Park next August as part of a UK and Ireland tour.

This frenzy regarding these Croker dates has also set new records for spending this year, according to AIB Spend Trend. See more on this from Nova here.
