A video is doing the rounds online of Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce belting out the lyrics to ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’, as the song plays out at the US Tennis Open. The Darkness’ frontman Justin Hawkins has put out a video on TikTok expressing gratitude for Taylor Swift and the public display of fandom!
The original video shows Taylor enthusiastically playing air guitar and lip-syncing, as Travis Kelce, tight end for Kansas City Chiefs, joins in and the pair enjoy some time off together at the US Open. The rest of the crowd mouth the same lyrics, but songstress Taylor really makes the most of it, just for fun.
Justin Hawkins responded to the viral moment with a genuine thank-you, and took the opportunity to mention how well-looked-after he and his daughter were when they landed VIP treatment at the Zurich leg of Swift’s Eras Tour. Taylor had left a note at their seats, citing ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’ as one of her favourite songs, and expressing her excitement that they were at the show. Hawkins said he must have been ‘dad of the century’ in that moment, as it came as a complete surprise to him and his daughter. He went on to say proudly: “My little girl can’t wait to tell her friends at school”…”That’s a really lovely start to the day – nice one guys”.
Back in 2016, Taylor Swift was featured in an advert for Apple Music, in which she lip-synced to the same song and danced around a home office. Speaking to Billboard about the advert at the time, Hawkins said: “I didn’t think we could get any sexier, but somehow Taylor raised the bar! Taylor Swift used to come to a lot of our shows back in the day. It’s good to see she hasn’t given up on her roots!”
In 2018 she brought Bryan Adams out on stage in Toronto for an epic joint rendition of ‘Summer of ‘69’, and James Taylor joined her at her sold-out Madison Square Garden concert back in 2011. She was in fact named after James Taylor, something the singer claimed she didn’t know until years later when she told her mother how much she adored the song “Fire and Rain.” Indeed, it’s nice to see the pop-sensation doesn’t let her sweeping success stop her from enjoying and honouring classic rock acts.
