Tributes have been paid to American singer-songwriter JD Souther, who died aged 78.

Souther was renowned for co-writing hit songs with the Eagles, including ‘Heartache Tonight’, and ‘New Kid In Town’, as well as Linda Ronstadt’s ‘Faithless Love’.

Other Eagles hits co-written by Souther also include  ‘Best Of My Love’, ‘Victim Of Love’, ‘James Dean’, ‘Doolin-Dalton’, ‘The Sad Cafe’, ‘You Never Cry Like A Lover’, ‘Teenage Jail’ and ‘Last Good Time In Town’.

He also released his own major hit with ‘You’re My Lonely’ in 1979, as well as releasing eight studio albums as a solo artist, with the most recent coming in 2015 with ‘Tenderness’.

One of his albums, ‘The Heart Of The Matter’ saw several tracks co-written by Eagles bandmate and close friend Don Henley.

“sad to share this news”

News of Souther’s death was confirmed by a representative for the Eagles, who said that he died “peacefully” at his home in New Mexico.

In a sweet tribute to Souther, fellow musician Stephen Bishop shared this post on X.

“JD and I shared many memories, but one that stands out is when we wrote a song together called For Love back in the 1980s. Though we never finished the song, we did a demo, and I’ll forever cherish that collaboration. JD was a remarkable talent, and his contributions to music are immeasurable. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him”, he said.

JD Souther had been due to embark on a tour with Karla Bonoff, a fellow 70s singer-songwriter.

He had recently performed several shows earlier this month, with his last performance taking place at the Baby Grand in Wilmington, Delaware on September 12.

He also wrote tracks for James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait and the Dixie Chicks.

As well as a career in music, JD Souther was also an actor, playing the role of John Dunaway in the third season of TV drama Thirtysomething in 1989.

Other films and TV shows also include, Postcards From The Edge, Purgatory, My Girl 2 and Deadline.

He also recently had a recurring role in the first season of Nashville, a country music drama from 2012, before later reprising his role in 2017.

Earlier this Summer, JD Souther’s former band the Eagles added further dates to their Las Vegas Sphere residency due to “overwhelming demand”. More on this from Nova here.
