A Fine Gael senator is calling for signage to be put up at the Forty Foot in Dublin, to warn people of the risk of high waves.
Barry Ward has made the call, following a number of incidents where swimmers got into difficulty in the water.
He’s also looking to raise awareness around the risk of being pulled out to sea by powerful waves in the area.
There’s a call for signs to be installed at the Forty Foot to alert swimmers to safety risks.
It comes after a young child reportedly got into trouble over the weekend when swept in by a powerful wave.
It’s believed their father entered the water to save them and a bystander threw in a life ring to help.
Fine Gael Senator for Dún Laoghaire Barry Ward says the lack of warning signs at the location is a real concern:
“There are no signs that I’m aware of. There used to be a sign in relation to the HSS, which was the ferry to Holyhead. But those signs have been taken down obviously since that ferry stopped“.
“We know the Forty Foot is a famous destination for tourists. It’s in every guidebook that deals with South Dublin. So you have lots of people coming to the Forty Foot every day who are not regulars, who are not locals, who may not know the waters.
It seems to me the minimum thing that Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council could do is to put up signs simply warning people that there is a possibility that the waves could come in“.
Senator Ward has also raised concerns about water quality at the location and has called for this to be looked into.
