Voters across Ireland head to the polls today in a general election that will shape the country's political direction for the next five years.

Recent opinion polls show the three largest parties neck-and-neck, with one party leader calling the race "too close to call."

Voters will decide who will occupy the 174 Dáil seats, with nearly 3.7 million people eligible to cast their ballots for almost 700 candidates nationwide.

Polling stations are open until 10 PM.

Voters should bring ID and, ideally, their polling card, though the latter is not required.

In the polling booth, voters must rank candidates in order of preference, marking "1" for their first choice, "2" for their second, it is up to you how many preferences you want to put on the ballot.

Using Xs, ticks, or writing on the ballot could result in a spoiled vote.
