This morning, after months of debate, we finally found out if the people of Scotland want to stay with Britain or go solo.
The Scots voted against independence in its historic referendum. Reports indicate a record turnout, with electoral turnouts of well over 80 per cent in many areas.
The last few polls leading up to the referendum had suggested a very close margin, with many saying that the vote was too close to call.
The 4 million people registered to vote, chose to stick with the United Kingdom. The No campaign received 55 per cent of the vote, while the Yes campaign received 45 per cent.
Musicians took to Twitter to celebrate and commiserate.
Muse’s Matt Bellamy described the referendum as “exhilarating” and praised its dedication to direct democracy, while Frightened Rabbit’s Grant Hutchison said, “We could have changed our future and we decided it wasn’t for us.”
Franz Ferdinand’s singer Alex Kaprons, who campaigned for a ‘Yes’ vote wrote, “Oh well. Not this time. Thanks for all the positive messages.”
Stuart Braithwaite guitarist of rock band Mogwai, posted, “Someone right now is printing up “Don’t blame me, I voted YES” stickers and badges.”
Garbage said, “The Scots have voted. We remain in the United Kingdom.”
And finally, Aidan John Moffat singer of Arab Strap wrote, “Scotland! Meet the new boss. Quite literally the same as the old boss.”
