On this day in rock history: October 7th.

1966: New Orleans R&B singer Smiley Lewis, died of stomach cancer. He penned the track 'One Night' which Elvis Presley covered.

1967: The Mamas And The Papas singer Cass Elliot spent the night in a London jail after being accused of not paying her hotel bill. The band had to cancel a television and concert appearance.

1967: The Beatles rejected an offer of one million dollars from promoter Sid Bernstein to make a second appearance at New York's Shea Stadium.

1975: John Lennon was awarded a Green Card, after the US Court of Appeals overturns a longstanding deportation order. The court ruled that his 1968 arrest in Britain for possession of marijuana was "contrary to US ideas of due process and was invalid as a means of banishing the former Beatle from America."

1978: Billboard magazine reveals that Marvin Gaye has declared bankruptcy twice in the past year claiming debts of over seven million dollars.

1982: Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page is given a 12-month suspened sentance after being found guilty of possessing cocaine.

1995: Alanis Morissette went to number 1 on the US album chart with Jagged Little Pill. The album sold 30 million copies ans was the biggest selling album ever by a female artist.

2002: Mick Jagger donates £100,000 to his old primary school to help pay for a music director and buy instruments. The new centre was named after Mick Jagger.

2006: Babyshambles delay their last five dates on their UK tour to give singer Pete Doherty time to recover from drug treatment.

2009: Monkees singer Davy Jones rules out ever reuniting with his former sixties band, launching a scathing attack on each of his old band mates.
