Sting’s Broadway musical ‘The Last Ship’ may be headed towards the rocks, after reports of a less than impressive turnout at the opening night.
Poor ticket sales may result in the show being closed down early, only a week after opening in New York.
‘The Last Ship’ features music and lyrics written by The Police’s frontman.
Sources have leaked the mortifying news to the New York Post that the musical took in just over €80,000 on its opening night.
That might seem like a fairly decent return, but just to cover the show’s running costs and break-even ‘The Last Ship’ must shift ticket sales of between €200,000 to €280,000 as a minimum per night.
The perplexing thing is during the previews, ‘The Last Ship’ took in a little more than €400,000 a week, possibly bad reviews have scared the punters away.
Sting isn’t giving up on his Broadway dream yet though, the show’s producers will begin a new TV campaign in the coming weeks to try and revive interest in the event. If ticket sales are still disappointing the musical may have to be axed.
‘The Last Ship’ is based on a book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey and is partly inspired by Sting’s experiences in shipbuilding industry in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear.
Next year, Sting will be performing a joint-arena tour with Paul Simon. The duo are playing Dublin’s 3Arena on April 07th.
