In a new TV show to be aired on BBC Four, Noel Gallagher has said that rock’n’roll is currently in hibernation. Noel appears on What Ever Happened To Rock ‘N’ Roll?, which airs tonight on BBC Four.
Speaking about the current state of the genre, Noel said since Arctic Monkeys emerged 10 years ago, there haven’t been any great rock bands. Also he said that the internet has had a negative impact on up and coming bands.
Noel also criticised the reluctance of record labels to sign bands like Arctic Monkeys “The record labels just aren’t interested in working-class bands any more.” Speaking about the impact of the internet Noel said “In theory the internet and YouTube should be helping new bands get off the ground but it hasn’t – it’s got worse.”
Besides all the negativity, he had some words to say about the whole “rock is dead” argument “[Rock’n’roll is not dead] as long as I’m still going, it’s f**king not,” Noel criticised the current generation however “It’s there but it’s certainly lacking the re-generation process.”
Noel finished by citing the lack of bands nowadays saying “Since the Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Razorlight and The Libertines there has been nothing. You name me one band since them. So that’s 10 years ago. So the evidence is that it is kind of in hibernation.”
