Tom Petty for the first time has spoken about his heroine addiction in his new autobiography. The book was recently released and is simply titled Petty: The Biography.
The book was written by Warren Zanes, and the biography details Petty’s drug use and is the first time the musician has spoken publicly about his heroine addiction. Even though the biography is ‘unauthorised’ it does have the backing of Tom Petty himself.
It was written following extensive interviews with the American singer-songwriter and leader of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Warren Zanes recently spoke about the book in a new interview and spoke about why Petty decided to keep it unofficial.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Zanes said “He didn’t want it to be authorized because he felt like authorized meant bull,” adding “He said, ‘I want it to be yours. And I can’t tell you what you can and can’t write.”
Zanes continued saying “He’s a rock and roller. He had had encounters with people who did heroin, and he hit a point in his life when he did not know what to do with the pain he was feeling.”
