Original handwritten lyrics from Bob Dylan's 'Mr Tambourine Man', have sold for more than $500,000 under the hammer.
The timing of the sale could not have been better, considering the recent release of the musician's biopic, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet.
Two yellow sheets with lyrics for this hit, fetched for $508,000 under the hammer at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California. Other items sold at the auction also include other Bob Dylan memorabilia, such as a 1983 Fender Telecaster and a 1968 oil painting created and signed by the music legend.
These pages include three typewritten lyrics of early drafts of 'Mr Tambourine Man', with Bob Dylan's notes found in the margins.
It has also been believed that they were typed in the home of music journalist Al Aronowitz in March 1964, where Bob Dylan spent the night writing and re-drafting the song, using Aronowitz's own typewriter. Find out more on this here.
According to Aronowitz, he “found a waste basket full of crumpled false starts”, adding that he "took the crumpled sheets, smoothed them out, read the crazy leaping lines, smiled to myself at the leaps that never landed and then put the sheets into a file folder".
'Mr Tambourine Man' was originally released in 1965, featuring on the album, 'Bringing It All Back Home'.
The song was covered by The Byrds, going on to reach number one in the UK and US. It was the first composition released by Dylan to achieve this feat.
News of this auction comes just days after Bob Dylan set up his own TikTok account, just days before it was due to be banned in the US. More on this from Nova here.
