U2 frontman Bono was among a list of household names to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from outgoing President Joe Biden over the weekend.
The Irish singer was among a list of celebrities, including Hollywood actor Denzel Washington, and Michael J Fox. While sporting icons Lionel Messi, and Magic Johnson, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, fashion designer Ralph Lauren were also recognised.
Former US First Lady, and 2016 presidential candidate Hilary Clinton was also honoured at the event.
The award ceremony is hailed as America's highest civilian honour, and took place at a ceremony in Washington D.C. It recognises those who "have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors".
"President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else", they added.
At the event itself, Joe Biden spoke to the audience.
"Together, you leave an incredible mark - and I mean this sincerely, this group - you leave an incredible mark on our country", the outgoing president said.
Other recipients of the award on the day also included, billionaire investor George Soros, the naturalist Jane Goodall, and TV educator Bill Nye the Science Guy.
