‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’ sees Sacha Baron Cohen reprise his role as Borat.
It is the follow up to his 2006 hit film ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’. With the country in the midst of a second lockdown and cold, dark nights, we could all use a laugh right now.
You can check out the trailer for the new film below.
Whether it was Cohen playing Ali G, Borat or Bruno, the actor has always delivered great comedy in where he makes fools of the people he interacts with.
Most people recognise Borat now, yet that wasn’t a major issue for the film. A lot of the stunts and scenes in the new film see Borat in disguise. He has also brought along Tutar, Borat’s daughter to join him in his escapades.
She is played by unknown Bulgarian actor, Maria Bakalova. Some critics have suggested her performance in the movie to be potentially worth an Oscar nomination.
Tutar gives the movie a different perspective. Her need to feel validated by Borat plays throughout the film and culminates in Borat learning a thing or two about women.
When the first Borat film came out, the world was completely different. There were no smartphones, social media was just beginning, and George W Bush was president. In the new film, Borat tackles Covid-19 and Trump. In the movie, Borat is seen talking to his new hosts and asks them “What’s more dangerous, this virus or the Democrats?” His hosts respond with “The Democrats”.
Borat pokes fun at the deep South of America and makes a scene at the Republican National Convention. Most people will enjoy Borat making fun of Vice-President Mike Pence before being escorted from a Republican rally.
Americans will usually put up with a lot in order to avoid rocking the boat. It’s why comedians like Cohen have great success in America. While playing Ali G, Cohen had a great time at the expense of Donald Trump.
In the most shocking scene in the film, Borat and Tutar engineer a meeting with Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer. Without spoiling it, the scene has proved to be so controversial that the former Mayor of New York is now facing questions about the scene. It is just another set back in Trump’s campaign.
The film ends on a poignant message. It encourages people to get out and vote. While Borat pokes fun at America in this film, the underlying message he is presenting is that America has become so far detached from reality. It’s why he urges people to cast their vote.
‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan’ is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from today.
