Gardai have seized almost 5,000 cars from unaccompanied learner drivers so far this year.

This brings the total to 25,000 since stricter laws were introduced in 2018.

Under current laws, drivers caught without a qualified supervisor face a €160 fine and two penalty points.

Car owners who allow unaccompanied learners to drive risk a €1,000 fine, prosecution, and vehicle seizure.

According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), there are over 360,000 active learner permits in Ireland. Of these, 67,000 drivers are on their third or subsequent permit, while nearly 30,000 have yet to take the driving test.

The figures highlight ongoing challenges in ensuring compliance with driving regulations to improve road safety.
