CCTV footage of a reckless woman taking glass shards from her top, placing them into her mouth before pretending to choke were released by a pub in Co. Kildare today.
The Vintners' Federation of Ireland says the time is right for the government to introduce a dedicated Garda Fraud Unit following this latest shocking incident.
A woman was recorded putting glass in her mouth and pretending to choke on it in an incident described as far more common than you might initially think.
The clip has been described as "typical" of what small publicans are facing as they battle soaring insurance premiums and massive compensation claims.
The pub group says it's "lucky" the owners of Judge Roy Beans in Newbridge has CCTV in place otherwise it could have had a financial impact on the business.
The footage from Judge Roy Beans in Newbridge shows the woman eating the glass before pretending to choke and then claiming to bar staff that it was in her food and she had consumed it by accident.
After being confronted the woman denied putting the glass in her mouth and said the accusation was "ridiculous".
The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland which represents 4,000 pubs in Ireland has said that the case shines a light on the extent of compensation culture currently affecting Ireland.
VFI Chief Executive Padraig Cribben says:
"The so-called ‘compo culture’ stems from the fact that people think they can get away with making outrageous insurance claims, a belief supported and encouraged by some within the legal sector and facilitated by insurers settling dubious claims.
"The public needs to understand that false and exaggerated claims force businesses to close and staff to lose their jobs."
