Cher has made several revelations from her marriage to Sonny Bono.

The singer released the first part of her self titled memoir this week, where she lifts the lid on her “loveless marriage” to her musical partner, including thoughts of suicide, and allegations that Sonny tried to kill her.

The singer revealed that she considered jumping from a Las Vegas hotel balcony to escape her husband in 1972. She said that she felt “trapped” as every aspect of her life was controlled by her former spouse.

Cher also claimed that Sonny was so jealous, that he would not let her wear perfume, taking full control of her career and finances. She was not allowed to own her own bank account.

“I was dizzy with loneliness,” she wrote. “I saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and simply disappear”.

That night, Cher said that she felt so “defeated”, that she did not see another way out.

She continued: “For a few crazy minutes I couldn’t imagine any other option”.

“I did this five or six times, and each time I’d think about (their child) Chaz, about my mother (Georgia), about my sister (Georganne), about everybody and how things like this could make people who look up to me feel that it’s a viable situation and I would step back inside”.

“I don’t have to jump off”

Cher then revealed that she had an epiphany: “I don’t have to jump off. I can just leave him”.

She also claimed that Sonny “seriously thought” of killing her towards the end of their marriage.

The couple filed for divorce in 1974 having been married since 1969, following a long custody battle over their son Chaz.

In other news, Elton John’s Broadway musical has been cancelled, due to low ticket sales and poor early reviews. More on this here.
