Cillian Murphy has been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as J Robert Oppenheimer, in Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic Oppenheimer.

Murphy, who is also nominated for a Bafta and an SAG award for the performance, has won a Golden Globe and is considered a frontrunner to take home the best actor Academy Award.

The Cork actor is up against Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright for the Oscar.

In further good news, The Irish production Poor Things, produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Dublin-based Element Pictures, has also received 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Emma Stone) and Best Cinematography for Dubliner Robbie Ryan.

There was some Irish disappointment as Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal missed out on a nomination for their roles in All Of Us Strangers and Barry Keoghan was overlooked for his lead in Saltburn.

As expected the nominations have been dominated by Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer, about the the theoretical physicist described as the "father of the atomic bomb", in in contention 13 awards including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, as well as acting awards for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Junior and Emily Blunt.

The Academy Awards are voted for by almost 11,000 voters of industry professionals from 93 countries and take place on Sunday 10 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
