Cillian Murphy took home yet another Best Actor award, after landing the top prize at this year’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards.

Fresh from his BAFTAs triumph last week, Cillian Murphy won Best Actor for his role as Robert J Oppenheimer in the Christopher Nolan directed biopic, Oppenheimer, on a night where the movie also won Best Cast in a Motion Picture, and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

The ceremony which took place at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, also saw Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr win Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss, head of the Atomic Energy Commission.

“part of something truly wonderful”

Accepting his award, Cillian Murphy recognised that he was “part of something truly wonderful”.

“Twenty-eight years ago when I was trying to become an actor, I was a failed musician and I felt extremely like an interloper, but now looking out at you guys here today, I know I am part of something truly wonderful, so thank you”, the actor said.

Elsewhere, Kenneth Branagh who plays physicist Niels Bohr in the film, described Oppenheimer winning Outstanding Performance by a Cas in a Motion Picture, as a “full circle moment”.

“Thank you Sag-Aftra, thank you for fighting for us,” he said. “Thank you for every Sag-Aftra member whose support and whose sacrifice allows us to be standing here, better than we were before”.

“When we were all last together, it was at the premiere of this film on July 14 when the strike was just about to begin, led by our fearless leader, the great Cillian Murphy.

“We went from the red carpet and we didn’t see the film that night. We happily went in the direction of solidarity with your good selves”, he added. “So this is a full circle moment for us”.

On the night, Lily Gladstone also took home the Best Actress award for her role in Martin Scoresese’s ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’, while Allen White and Ayo Edebiri took home Best Actor and Actress awards for their roles in TV Comedy Bear, which also won Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series
