Taoiseach Micheál Martin has confirmed that the wearing of face coverings on public transport will be compulsory from Monday, when regulations making this legally enforceable will come into effect.
Michael Martin said the Government will also encourage people to wear face coverings in crowded indoor gatherings and where social distancing is not possible.
Concerns have been expressed about indoor gatherings and how they may be causing an increase in the prevalence of the virus.
There is also concern about travel-related incidents contributing to the spread of the virus.
