A TD has warned the row over speaking time in the Dáil could be escalated next week, as tensions continue to mount over the Government’s deal with Independent TD Michael Lowry.
A new Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll shows a majority of the public sides with the opposition in the dispute, with significant discontent among Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael supporters.
More than half (53%) of their voters disapprove of their parties working with Lowry, while only 41% of Fianna Fáil supporters back the Government’s stance.
Public disapproval of Lowry’s role has risen to 66%, up three points from last month, reflecting growing unease over his involvement. Even among Fine Gael voters, over a third side with the opposition, and among Independent supporters, 64% also back the opposition’s stance.
With another heated debate expected in the Dáil on Wednesday, further disruption seems likely, as pressure builds on the Government to resolve the controversy.
